2019 Year in Review...

March 6, 2019
Red Lake County Central River Watch Team accepted their First Place Gold Award. Receiving award was RLCC River Watch Advisor Kathryn Tran, Tanisha Srnsky, Sidney Olson, Kaitlyn Morris and Red Lake Watershed District Staff Ashley Hitt.
On Saturday, February 23rd, a full house (all 350 tickets sold) filled the Oklee Community Hall with anticipation of a delicious walleye dinner, once again prepared by the Gonvick experts and lots of fun and drawings and games.
The RLCC Mustang Wrestling team sent two wrestlers to state. They are Damon Ferguson and Tristyn Ferguson. Their coaches are Nick Cervantes and Cameron Lundeen.
The Red Lake County Central Girls’ Basketball team had a Gratitude Night on Tuesday, February 19th in Plummer. Each member of the team chose someone that has had an impact on their life.

You will have noticed in the past week or so that some of the street lights in Oklee have been updated to LED (light-emitting diode) lights.
This past week, the area has been told of the large storm coming our way and to prepare for up to 12 inches of snow in some area and it would cover 2/3 of the state of Minnesota. The snow did start in our local area on Saturday morning continuing until 4 or 5 on Sunday morning leaving about 6 - 8 inches of snow. Detroit Lakes received 13 inches of snow, Red Lake Falls, 12 inches, and Thief River Falls 9 inches.
The Red Lake County Central Student Senate hosted the Student Senate Summit in Oklee this spring on March 6th. Eleven schools attended the summit.
RLC speech team member Danny Guillemette got second place in Poetry at the speech meet in Walker on March 2nd.
Around 200 kids attended the RLCC Youth Wrestling Tournament in Oklee on March 7th.

The Northwest Division (NWD) Student Council Advisor of the Year Award went to Mr. Randy Huie. Huie will receive a certificate for his award at the State Student Council Convention in April.
Snow on roofs has caused much damage in the area. In the past couple of weeks, there have been a few buildings that have had their roofs collapse into the building. Ross Hegge had one of his sheds collapse recently on top of his equipment stored inside. And D & R Grociery owners said their building to the north has collapse last Wednesday due to snow.
RLCC students that participated in the Vocal Ensembles in EGF were: Abby Walton, AJ Jones, Leilah VanDam, Shyla Styles, Tyler Eskeli, Brock Tvedt, Brody Moen, Kia Bachand, Adriel Bakken, Karena Melby, and RLCC Music teacher Mrs. Patty Mickelson, Maddie Inda-Valdez, Izzy Plante, Bailey Sherman, Marissa Schiebe, Bella Russillo, Katelyn Suchy, Emily Kolstoe, Bailey Culkins, Lilly Hanson, Janae Olson,  Thomas Benson, Kjerstin Nelson, Cari Bachand, Lauren Jones, Taya Morinville, and Peyton Fish.
The Red Lake County Rebels began the 2018-2019 3rd grade basketball season last November. On Friday, March 8th, RLC started the tournament off by defeating East Grand Forks 20-14. Then, the Rebels defeated Thompson 22-17 to earn the #1 seed in their pool. The Rebels returned to EGF on Saturday, March 9th, to play the Grand Forks Starz in the Championship game! This was another exciting game where both teams played well, gave 100% effort, and played together as a team. The RLC Rebels came out on top with a score of 29-21! CHAMPIONS in their final tournament of the season!
Another week has passed and we still look at snow all around Oklee. Today is nice with some melting taking place. There is still so much snow around that you wonder if April will see any birds returning from their winter homes.

On Friday, Ryan’s Backhoe tore down the old building to the north of D & R Grocery, which they used for storage.
The Lost River east of Oklee is starting to change over from snow covered, to water covered over the remaining ice.
One of Red Lake County Central Senior High Knowledge Bowl teams competed in the Regional Senior High Knowledge Bowl Competition in Thief River Falls on March 13th. RLCC placed 17th. The top four teams advanced to State-the four teams that advanced were Crookston, Bemidji, Warroad and Fosston.
On Wednesday, March 6 the Red Lake County Central anatomy students went to University of ND Medical School with their teacher Mr. Steven Strutz. Those who attended were Sarah Christensen, Natalia Whalen, Austin Jensen, Jenna Pahlen, Courtney Rude, Sophia Linder, and Tanisha Srnsky.
The Red Lake County Speech Team placed third on Saturday, March 16th at Blackduck’s Speech Meet. The placing individuals were: Phillip Sorenson placing fourth in Discussion; Sage Hartman and Mariah Peterson, placing second in Duo Interpretation; Lacey Pendelton and Lilly Hanson, placing third in Duo Interpretation; Mariah Peterson, placing third in Humor; Danny Guillemette, placing second in Poetry; Jayden Iverson, placing fourth in Poetry, and Sage Hartman, placing sixth in Prose.
Red Lake County residents gathered at the Annual Picnic in Arizona. Those attending were: Clarence Gagner, Sally (Gagner) Staggert, Pat (Gagner) Proulx, Mark Spear, Marie (Desautel) Kleven, Darla Desautel, Jerry Gagner, Monica (Dufault) Beauchane,Barbara (Gagner) LaCoursiere, Joanne (Spear) Landreville, Margaret (Gagner) Grabinski, Carol (Gagner) Kroleck.
