16 RLCC students attend Creativity Festival

Sixteen students in grades five through eight from Red Lake County Central attended the 2017 Creativity Festival. It was held at Bemidji State University on Thursday, January 5. The festival helped students learn about arts, nature, science, creativity, and problem-solving.
The day opened with a guest speaker, Dave Walbridge. His life has involved creativity including writing, teaching, and performing. He has performed 500 shows for families and friends. He has been on the TV and has performed at the Minnesota State Fair. He taught magic, creativity and writing. Walbridge has written for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”
The students next went to three breakout sessions. One sessions was Honeybee Challenge about how bees have a big impact on the ecosystem. With the help of the 4-H staff from the University of Minnesota, participants got to build a model honeybee and find out how they gather their pollen. In Learning Origami the class was taught by a Japanese American instructor who taught students on paper folding. Participants could make a traditional Native American weaving and spiritual object in the God’s Eye session. In Fantasy Architecture they created a model building. Students learned a variety of toys and games in Global Games. There were many more sessions to choose.
Attending the Creativity Festival from RLCC were fifth graders Jamie Flatgard, Ella Moen, Everett Svendsen, and Timothy Torgerson; sixth graders MiReya Gibbs, Luci Svendson, Damon Ferguson, and Carson Lambert; seventh graders Hannah Bassage, Taya Morinville, Jeremiah Rathsack, and Jonathan Roue; and eighth graders Kia Bachand, Tristyn Ferguson, Karena Melby, and Brody Moen.
The students really enjoyed the festival. Melby said that it was a very good experience and was a fun trip. She enjoyed the magic and the things he did. Melby learned a lot about liquid nitrogen and fire, and Push and Pull focused on inertia, gravity, and Newton’s law. She also learned how to make an engine. She liked Mad about Science and said, “All the experiments were really cool.”
Bachand liked the main speaker because he was interesting to listen to. Her favorite session was Mad about Science. There were lots of experiments that were really cool to watch. She learned that “there is a lot of things you can do with fire and liquid nitrogen.” Another thing she learned about was Newton’s Laws of Motion.
