During a public meeting held on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the McIntosh Community Center both the McIntosh City Council and the McIntosh Economic Development Authority Board were present to discuss with the citizens of McIntosh the possibility of listing Poplar Meadows Assisted Living for sale with the Real Eastate company, Marcus & Millchap.
Mayor Toby Strom began the meeting by explaining to all present the amounts of money that the residents of McIntosh have been levied for the past 4 years to support Poplar Meadows, along with the extra money that the City has provided for the payments on Poplar Meadows from the General Fund.
MEDA President Eileen Hegg, agreed that there was quite a burden on the City and it’s residents, but voiced her concern about the possible sale and purchase of the facility by someone who is not from the area and curent status of the current residents and the staff.
Gary Frisk, a member of MEDA explained the current uprise in revenue of Poplar Meadows thanks to the great management of the facility by Julie Christianson. Yet, it is still not enough of an increase to cover the entire debt payments.
After much discussion with the residents and members of the Council and MEDA Board, Sharlene Knutson, from McIntosh Senior Living voiced that the Board at the Senior Living facility was interested in the purchase of Poplar Meadows. By owning both facilites in McIntosh, there would be the ability to share some services and possibly make Poplar Meadows self-supporting, financially.
The McIntosh Senior Living Board is currently working with the USDA to secure a loan for the purchase.
Mayor Strom then motioned the council to hold off on the listing of Poplar Meadows until MSL was able to research and find if the purchase is possible. Both the McIntosh City Council and the McIntosh EDA Board voted unanimously to reconsider the listing the Facility giving MSL time to secure their financing.
