The Clearbrook-Gonvick Winter Sports Banquet was held at the school on Tuesday evening, April 30th. Athletic director Kyle Christianson opened the event with a thank you to Robin Proffit and her kitchen staff for the meal served to the athletes, coaches and families. He also expressed appreciation for all those who help make the athletic program function including custodians, administration, office staff, coaches, officials, parents and the players.
Mr. Christianson next introduced Chris Westrum, head boys’ varsity basketball coach. Coach Westrum gave a recap of the season, commenting on the big improvements made by the junior varsity team as well as the successes of the varsity players in their 2018-2019 season. Seniors Josiah Hubbard, Damen Bakke, Hunter Ehlers, Erick Bergman, and Ethan Dorman were honored. Ethan Dorman, Ben Engebretson, and Johnny Hamnes were named All-Conference. Erick Bergman and Alex Dawson were selected as All-Conference runners-up.
“This is the best group of parents I have ever worked with,” Coach Westrum stated. He thanked all those who drive bus, run concessions, set up and clean up, and operate cameras, working behind the scenes to make the games possible.
Mr. Christianson then introduced the head girls’ varsity basketball coach, Ross Faldet. Coach Faldet thanked Bob Westrum and Mike Lindgren for being a vital part of the coaching team and Mya Engen for serving as the team manager this year. Junior Jackie Lynn Taflin received the 1st Team North Wood’s All-Conference Award. Danae Stenzel, also a Junior, received the 2nd Team Northwood’s All-Conference Award. Senior Rachel Lavin was honored with the Senior Captain Award and a Northwood’s All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Coach Faldet also announced that the girls’ basketball team had won the Team Academic All-State “Gold Award” for demonstrating academic excellence through a combined GPA of 3.84.
“Don’t get complacent, don’t take your jersey for granted. Only about one to two percent of people in the whole country get to play on varsity teams,” was the advice Coach Faldet gave the athletes. He reminded them to work hard in the off-season, enjoy the sport, and do their best.
