Weather did not dampen Pumpkin Day in Gonvick

The annual  Gonvick Pumpkin Day was held last weekend. Although the weather was rather chilly it did not hamper the enthusiasm of the people attending.
Several events were planned for the 25th annual day.
Kandi’s Kitchen, Samhold Sunday School, Gonvick Fire Department and B-loved Brew from Grace Community Church of Bagley all were available to serve food for the day.
The Girl Scouts held a pie eating contest. Wining the two events were Matthew Forsberg and Isaac McQuown.
The car show had 48 entries with Wild Wes Kaupang providing musical entertainment. No fee was required to enter the vehicles. The top five cars received $100 each. They were voted on by the people who had cars in the show. This year they had an entry from  Rainy River, Ontario. He had a 1939 Oldsmobile. It was fuel injected, 4 speed overdrive with air suspension. It did not look like it could go over 140 mph. Pete Michniewicz had no plans to change what he had found with the car. It will stay just as he found it. The five $100 winners were Leah Byzewski from Grand Forks with a 1964 Ford Falcon; Jewel Strande from Crookston with a 1969 Chevelle; Bob Zeman with a 1931 Plymouth Coupe from Bemidji; Steve Hughes with a 1962 Chevy Impala from Gonvick and Jerry Lowe Jr. with a 1966 GTO from Grand Forks. John Brendalen won the Peoples Choice award with the Kit Car that had once belonged to Bjerknes Store in Gonvick.
The Pumpkin Spitting contest winners included a 30’ record by Christian Magnam from Bemidji for the $100; 2nd place was Chad Foré from Pine City with 29.6’ for $50 and 3rd place was Nicci Sears from Milaca with 27.5’ and $25.
The Great Pumpkin Drop was a 700 pound pumpkin filled with wrapped candy. Gustafson and Goudge provided the lift to raise the pumpkin several feet in the air. An area had been marked off for mashed pumpkin all over the ground. Children ran forward and grabbed up the candy and the messy remains of the pumpkin. See video in the Tricocanary.com Home page.
The great pumpkin weigh-off had Kaylin Erickson of Clearbrook having not only the largest pumpkin but a record for the biggest in the 25 years weighing 1,348 pounds. First place - Kayline Erickson 1,248 pounds, 2nd place Tucker Johnson 1,200 pounds, 3rd place JJ Solberg 1,172 pounds, 4th place Frank and Annie Berg 948 pounds, 5th place Bob Edevold 928 pounds, 6th place Matt Wickam 686 pounds, 7th place Lucky Junior 610 pounds, 8th place Erv Wickam 592 pounds and 10th place Al Danielson 446 pounds.
The bed races were the final event for the day. The winning racers received $500 for their effort. They included Jacob Londo, Trevor Anderson and Brandon Quern. Different heats narrowed the teams down to the three that competed for the winning event. 2nd place and $250 was Scott Stebe, Courtney Bergman and Allison Stebe. Third place and $100 were McKenzie Momerak, CJ Ruggero and Bryce Larue.
