Church Basement Rosemalers of Leonard recently received a grant from Region 2 Arts Council to sponsor a rosemaling workshop in Leonard. The workshop was held June 21 through June 23 in the fellowship hall of Our Savior’s Lutheran in Leonard. The instructor was Ruth Green, a Gold Medalist rosemaler from Decorah, Iowa who taught the Rogaland technique. Students learned brush care, backgrounding, c-strokes, double-loading and line work techniques from Ms. Green in the three-day workshop.
Attendees were Donn Portz, Christine Tollefson, Sandy Sather, Becky Colebank, Melanie Paulson, Beth Cue, Pam Larson and Ardella Lindberg. The group held a free exhibition on Wednesday, July 12th and invited the public to come see their workshop accomplishments and some of their past works. Many people came to enjoy the Norwegian treats and view the rosemaling.
The Church Basement Rosemalers meet at Our Savior’s on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and try their hand at this old Norwegian folk art. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota, through a grant from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
