A district-wide spelling bee was held at Clearbrook-Gonvick School for grades 5-8 on Friday, January 20.
The local school spelling bee, part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., is held annually, with the winner earning a chance to move on to regional, statewide, and even the national spelling bee.
Each classroom grades 5-8 holds a classroom spelling bee in early January to determine who advances to the district wide competition. The participants included Abby Engen and Haley McCoy representing grade 5, Madison Gerlofs and Kirsten Wilcowski representing grade 6, Kaylee Westrum and Lane Cadreau representing grade 7, and Hunter Spears and Gabe Lavine representing grade 8.
After about seven rounds of spelling, Haley McCoy won the competition. Cadreau placed fourth, Lavine placed third, and Spears placed second. McCoy will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee in Thief River Falls, on Wednesday, February 8. Contestants at the regional spelling bee first compete in a written round, with the top half advancing to the oral round of competition.
The winners at the regional level go to a Multi-Regional State Bee for a chance to advance to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. The Multi-Regional - State Spelling Bee will be held on February 21 at Lakes Country Service Cooperative in Fergus Falls.
