First Graders Presidential Review

On Thursday, April 4, Mrs. Hegg’s First Grade Class at Clearbrook-Gonvick presented their Presidential Review!  It was an exciting day as this long awaited event finally took place!
Mrs. Hegg invited her student’s families to participate in their Presidential Review.  As family members walked in, they were given a number with a question on it and where given the role of a News Reporter. After each student gave their Presidential Report on their microphone, they had two minutes to call on numbers and answer questions.  Each student did an amazing job reading their report and even more impressive was answering questions about the President they did research on.
This event came about when Mrs. Hegg wanted her students to understand the importance that each President has had on our country and why they got to have Presidents’ Day off from school. So for three weeks, they reviewed all 45 Presidents; making comparisons and learning little details about each President.
Next, each student selected the President that they thought was the most interesting to them. Then Mrs. Darcy Hegg met with Mr. Casey Kroulik, the High School Social Studies Teacher, to assign a High School Student to each First Grade Student to do further research on the President each child selected.  These High School Students spent 30 minutes in the Computer Lab helping their assigned First Grader discover more details about their President.  Then each student filled in an Outline about their President.  The Outline was written into a Rough Draft where Mrs. Hegg and each student worked together to make corrections.  Then each child rewrote their speech into a Final Draft and began practicing reading it.
The next two weeks, time was set aside to practice reading their reports and answering questions.  The students would act as the News Reporters; holding up their number and then asking questions after each student read their report.
This huge assignment fulfilled many State Standards in reading, writing, language arts, social studies and even math!  After all that work, each student learned so much and delighted their parents by including them in their Presidential Report Day!  You may stop by the elementary wing and use your phone or Ipad to play their QR code to see each child’s presentation!
