Clearwater County Nursing Service along with local law enforcement participated in bicycle safety month in May by teaching bicycle safety to the third grade students in Clearwater County. Every year about 800 Americans die because of bicycle related injuries and more than half a million end up in hospital emergency rooms because of injuries.
Clearwater-Polk’s Operation Round-up donated funds to purchase helmets for the 98 third graders in Bagley Elementary School and 37 in Clearbrook-Gonvick Schools. After a presentation on how helmets can help protect your head, each child was presented a helmet . Law enforcement reviewed the bicycle laws and how each one of us can ride safely in our community.
Special guest speaker Sam Smith of Itasca Sports assisted in the Bagley Elementary School demonstrating how to inspect your bicycle to make sure it is safe for riding. Dan Gazelka of the Clearbrook Police Department held a bicycle rodeo in Clearbrook for the students to practice safe bike riding. Be Cool – Wear your helmet whenever riding bike!
