Staff lives up to haircut challenge

Clearbrook-Gonvick students were given a challenge by Principal Jeff Burgess on the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) tests. They were administered last April during the school year to various levels at the school. Reading for grades 3rd to 8th and 10th grade, Math tests to grades 3rd to 8th and 11th grade and Science tests for 5th to 8th grade and 10th grade. Tests were administered by Principal Jeff Burgess, School Counselor Kim Cousin and elementary staff.

Mr. Burgess offered the haircut to students as part of the challenge for students to give their best effort on the MCA’s. Mr. Christenson must have been swept up in the enthusiasm and volunteered to join Mr. Burgess.

The challenge was based on the composite average proficiency score of Reading, Math and Science being higher than a neighboring school. Clearbrook-Gonvick had 44.96 and the neighboring school had - 41.86.

The two classes (4th and 8th grade) that had the most improvement each had the names of two students drawn out of the hat to do the haircut. Selected by Mr. Burgess - last year’s 4th grade - Ashlyn Churness and Matt Roy.

Selected by Mr. Kyle Christenson - last year’s 8th grade - Bobby Olson and Adriana Churness. Kyle is the Physical Education, Health and Activities Director.

The day arrived that Burgess and Christianson had to have their hair cut as the students reached their goal. The two were in the school gym on Wednesday, September 2 to follow through on the challenge.
