Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning
The Fall NELL programs will begin on September 16 at 9:30 am at the Gonvick Community Center with the return of NELL favorite, artist and historian Steve Stark and his program: Theodore Roosevelt: Drawn to History!
Teddy Roosevelt’s legacy spread across the world, the nation, as well as in our backyard of Minnesota and North Dakota. Steve Stark brings the Roughrider president’s story to life through his unique storytelling and fast-drawings before your eyes.
Steve Stark is a state and national award winning editorial cartoonist who combines storytelling and lightning fast drawings in presentations he calls Illustrated History. The Minnesota native, now Fargo, ND citizen, Steve has presented a variety of history based presentations to thousands of people of all ages across 28 states and Washington DC.
Steve was born and raised in Excelsior, Minn. and after earning a B.A. at North Dakota State University received an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin/Superior where he and his wife lived in Two Harbors for a decade. Steve was the publisher of the Lake County News Chronicle in Two Harbors where his wife Gwen taught high school before they moved to Fargo in 1980. He has had a varied career path but during his time as an NDSU Extension Service Communications Specialist, county historical society executive director and advertising agency copywriter and creative director he has presented a wide variety of historical programs in schools, universities, government agencies and private business events.
NELL Programs will continue each week until October 29 and include The Last keeper at Split Rock lighthouse, Apollo Missions to the Moon, Geology of the region, Bombing the bog during WWII, as well as armchair tours of Australia, New Zealand and Norway. Each program is Wednesday morning at 9:30 and is free and open to all ages. NELL programs are offered at various locations in Clearwater and East Polk Counties.
Rounding out the season will be a Saturday evening Dinner and Concert on September 26 with Scandinavian musicians Paul Wilson and Mary Abendroth and a bus tour to the Concordia language villages on October 29. (Fees and reservations required for these two programs.)
