Clearbrook-Gonvick fourth grade class makes cattail dolls

Clearbrook-Gonvick fourth graders spent a beautiful October afternoon outside making cattail dolls. The dolls are made entirely from cattail reeds that have been soaked in water so that they are pliable. Students begin with making a ball that becomes the base of the head. Reeds are then draped around the ball to form the body. Once the doll has the right amount of reeds for the desired size, more wet reeds are used as ties to form the neck and the waist. Then a stalk is found to make the arms. Students can then embellish their dolls with braids, headpieces, tools, or with whatever they desire.

Each doll is unique and takes on its own personality. The fourth graders name their dolls and have them on display in the elementary showcase for all to see.

This annual project was started many years ago by Sherry Rettmann and has continued years after her retirement because of the popularity with students and parents. The cattail project would not be possible without the help of many wonderful volunteers. The fourth grade students would like to thank Craig Dahl for gathering the cattails, Sue Westrum, Pam Dyrdahl, Linda Engen, Crystal Smith, Grandpa Lloyd Engen, Dani Churness, Sharon Cassibo, Cindi Ballard, Jamie Weems, Denise Disrud, Robyn Johnson, Vincent White, and Sharae Kingbird for taking the time to make this day memorable.
