May 14 - The Granlund Lodge #240 of the Sons of Norway will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 14, at the Embassy Community Center in Fosston.  After the meeting, hotdogs and ice cream will be served in honor of Norwegian Independence Day, Syttende Mai, which is May 17th!  The program features Tim Johnson who will share and show his collection of local historic artifacts and include stories of settlers from NE Columbia Township.  As always,  the meeting, lunch and program are all open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. May 7 – Gonvick City Council at 5:00 pm.

May 2 to 10 – Clean-up week in Clearbrook. Letters were sent with last month’s bill to residents of Clearbrook.

May 5 - The high school music concert will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday May 5th. Mrs. Mickelson and Mrs. Aas are accompanied by Andrea Neeland.

May 7 - The elementary music concert will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday May 7th at the school.

May 7 - The University of Minnesota Crookston will have its second Homeschool Graduation Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. in Bede Ballroom on the UMN Crookston campus, with a reception to follow.

May 8 -The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office will be hosting an ATV safety class on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Bagley High School. Registration begins at 4:30 PM and class starts at 5:00 PM. You can pre-register with Andy Anderson at andyanderson@clearbrook-gonvick.k12.mn.us.

May 9 – Gonvick Legion Fish Fray starting at 5:00 p.m.

May 9 - 2026 Minnesota fishing season opener for walleye, northern pike, and other game fish. Good luck

May 13 - Senior Baccalaureate at 5:00 p.m. followed by the Senior scholarship program and banquet at 6:00 p.m.

May 17 - The 2026 Bagley Area Chamber City-Wide Rummage Sale is scheduled based on recent community event schedules. Maps of participating locations are typically available.

May 18 – Clearbrook-Gonvick School Board meeting starting at 7:00 p.m.

May 20 -   Clearbrook-Gonvick Kindergarten graduation at 1:00 p.m.

May 22 - The last day of school for Clearbrook-Gonvick students and they will dismiss at 12:30 p.m.

May 23 - Clearbrook-Gonvick High School Graduation at 2:00 p.m.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 73 state parks and recreation areas. This Free Park Day is one of four days each year on which visitors don’t need a vehicle permit at state parks and recreation areas. The DNR offers one-free day in each season, giving Minnesotans an opportunity to experience the parks at different times of year.

Free days for Minnesota state parks and recreation areas in 2026 are:

  • Saturday, June 13
  • Friday, Nov. 27

Tidbits

The City of Fosston hired a new police officer. Seth Senn will work as a new patrol officer.

County 1 road that is 4 miles east of Winger will be closed to traffic starting on Monday, May 11. The closure will be approximately one week to replace a culvert.

A Duluth man who plead guilty to illegally killing a moose is banned from big game hunting in Minnesota for a year.  That includes deer, elk, bear, and moose.  Dane Nelson was also sentenced to one year on unsupervised probation.  He was ordered to pay one thousand dollars in restitution to the state and 390 dollars in fees and a fine.  The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has not allowed moose hunting since 2012.

The Bemidji Rotary and Bemidji Chamber of Commerce are excited to announce that the Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival presented by Paul Bunyan Communications will celebrate its 20th anniversary July 30 through August 1. Early Bird Team Registration is now open, and teams can save $100 off the registration fee if they sign up by June 1st.

The Fosston Farmers Market will be starting May 23. That is located next to the East Polk Heritage Center on Highway 2 on the east side of Fosston. That will be every Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00.

 U.S. Representative Michelle Fischbach is winning a tightly contested Republican endorsement.  She is running for Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District and will face Democrat Erik Osberg in October.  Fischbach was challenged by Republican activist and veteran Dave Hughes.  The 7th Congressional District spans nearly the entire western third of Minnesota. Meanwhile, Erik Osberg won the DFL endorsement for Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District on Saturday, earning 65% of the vote on the first ballot.

Twin Pines Golf Course in Bagley opened for the 2026 season on Tuesday, April 21 at 10:00. a.m.  Early season clubhouse hours will be from 10:00 am to 6:00 p.m. with possible closures due to inclement weather on certain dates.

Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. President Donald Trump’s 2027 budget includes $250 million for a satellite operations center at Grand Forks Air Force Base, expanding the u-s space force’s role in next-generation missions. The expansion will bring a 180,000 square foot facility and over 100 personnel to the base. Sen. Kevin Cramer is chair of the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee and co-chair of the Senate Space Force Caucus. He says the site’s mission will strengthen the U.S. Space Force’s ability to detect, track, and target enemy space capabilities.
