We Gott’a Get Out of This Place, If It’s The Last Thing We Ever Do
Memories of a welder in Vietnam, is a story that I started about twenty years ago. The problem now is, twenty years ago I was writing the story in my mind, recalling and enjoying the memories of a Seabee welder. This was about thirty years after Vietnam, at that time I was still burning welding rods, splicing bridge piling. For some time, welding on bridges had become almost automatic, something not needing much mental attention. Some days I would just let my thoughts wander back to Vietnam. My closest friends could be counted on one hand. Of these I could remember, first and last names, where they were from before Vietnam, and a lot about their background. As I was welding those bridges, my memories of some other friends on the other hand, were not as sharp. So I would just work on it, sometimes hours on end. Some of these details would quite often drift back. But now it is over fifty years. Memories of my firsthand friends are still there. Unfortunately, some of the details that drifted back, twenty years ago, have since drifted away
My mom kept the letters I sent home. These were tucked away, in an unused upstairs bedroom, of our old farmhouse. These letters are quoted throughout my story and will be identified in italics. Matching up my pictures, taken in Vietnam with the letters has been a very satisfying trip down memory lane.

It follows Petty Office William Cole as he learns through his many trials and tribulations to forgive not only others to receive God’s forgiveness, but to also for himself in order to live God’s plans for his life He is a man struggling with alcoholism and suicidal thoughts as he grapples with the memories of an abusive childhood and trauma from his service in the Vietnam War.

Minnesota voters are deciding this fall whether schools should get more money from a state trust fund. The constitutional amendment would increase payouts from the Permanent School Fund. The fund was established in 1858 with proceeds from the sale of timber and minerals. Supporters say the change could give districts more flexible funding without raising taxes. Advocates are trying to raise awareness of the amendment because ballots with the question left blank will be counted as no votes against the proposal.

They are now offering broasted chicken on Wednesdays. You can expect fresh produce, quality meat, and more as they invest in the store. Look for professionally smoked meats to be available soon. Tidbits
The Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears had a close one last week. They hosted Win-E-Mac for football and had to go two days as a storm delayed the game. The Bears were ahead 14-8 when the game was called. The next day the team played back and worth and it went into overtime with the Bears losing a close one 30-28.
The International Falls School District, police responded to a report, which came in after school, of a student that brought a “gun” to Falls High School. Officers were able to locate the student at Falls High School with an “Airsoft BB Handgun” Wednesday evening. Law enforcement retrieved the “Airsoft BB Handgun” and say there is no threat to the public. The incident was against school policy, and disciplinary measures will be taken through the school.
The race for Minnesota Attorney General is considered to be tight with eleven weeks before the mid-term election. A KSTP/SurveyUSA poll shows that incumbent Keith Ellison and Republican challenger Ron Schutz are tied at 43 percent of support from voters. Schutz has a significant lead in the Greater Minnesota area, while Ellison is in control in the Twin Cities for Attorney General. Meanwhile, in the race for governor DFL U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar leads Republican nominee Lisa Demuth 51 percent to 36 percent. The Minnesota House Speaker will need to win over rural voters by a huge margin to win. In the U.S. Senate race, former Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan leads GOP nominee Michele Tafoya by five percentage points. The election is on November 3rd.
O.K. Fire and Fencing is organizing a Kiddo Rodeo immediately following the events at pumpkin days in Gonvick at 5pm September 26th, 2026! They will be holding this event at the rodeo grounds in Gonvick. Every child gets a turn and a prize for participating! There is no entry fee to children, but they do accept free will donations from the adult audience to help offset the cost of organizing the rodeo.

Hallmark Christmas Towns Voting Ends This Friday is the last day to vote in Hallmark’s Merriest Christmas Towns Contest. Bemidji is one of 25 finalists for the designation. One vote per email per day can be submitted. The winning town will get the national designation, and an opportunity for a Hallmark Christmas movie to be set in Bemidji. The 2026 wild rice season and the Minnesota DNR reminds harvesters that it is illegal to harvest rice stands until they are fully ripe. Trying to harvest rice before it is ripe can damage the plants not only for this year, but for years to come. Harvesters are allowed to take wild rice during the harvesting season from Aug.15 through Sep. 30, but Minnesota’s “Green Rice Law” prohibits the taking of unripe or “green” rice.
