Minnesota voters are deciding this fall whether schools should get more money from a state trust fund. The constitutional amendment would increase payouts from the Permanent School Fund. The fund was established in 1858 with proceeds from the sale of timber and minerals. Supporters say the change could give districts more flexible funding without raising taxes. Advocates are trying to raise awareness of the amendment because ballots with the question left blank will be counted as no votes against the proposal.
The Clearwater County Fair is coming August 5 to 9. They will be having the cutest baby picture contest. Send those pictures of 18 months and younger to be judged. Mail them to Terri Derby at 34180 180th Ave Bagley, MN 56621 by July 30.
Reading is Timeless
This program is geared toward children ages 5-11, but all ages are welcome to join the fun. Admission is free thanks to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
The site is in the Gonvick Community building at 179 Main Street. Summer Reading program at the Gonvick Library Link Site on Wednesday, July 29 at 2:00 p.m.
Free event with Mike Schneider in this polka-palooza! Travel back in time with the accordion player. Polka enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy clapping and singing along to the music in this interactive program which will also include magic, comedy and history as they travel back in time to visit heroes and legends of the past, like Amelia Earhart, Casey Jones and Paul Bunyan.

Billionaire philanthropist T. Denny Sanford dies at 90
T. Denny Sanford, who built a fortune in banking and a legacy in philanthropy across the upper Midwest, has died. Sanford Health, the hospital system that bears his name, announced Saturday that the billionaire passed away at age 90. No further details were released.
T. Denny Sanford entered the public consciousness in 2007 with a $400 million donation to what was then Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. "The Gift," as it was called, was intended to be a transformational step toward curing Type 1 diabetes. Two years later, the renamed Sanford Health merged with MeritCare Health System, based in Fargo, N.D. The combined system created a massive health-care footprint covering 130,000 square miles in parts of five states. The expansion continued, notably in 2011 with North Country Health Services in Bemidji, Minn., and with Medcenter One in Bismarck the following year.

The Altru Clinic in Erskine will be closing as of August 14, 2026. They do have clinics in Crookston, Thief River Falls and Red Lake Falls.
It is great to see the flags that Jon Watne has put up on the telephone poles as you come into Gonvick on Highway 92 from the east.

The 27-mile Wildlife Drive within the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area will be open July 18-26, Aug. 1-2 and Aug. 8-9. The self-guided tour allows visitors to experience wetland, woodland, brushland and grassland habitats, providing ample opportunities for wildlife viewing. Roseau River WMA managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and located 20 miles northwest of Roseau, is part of the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail, which consists of 45 sites spanning a 223-mile corridor in the northwestern part of the state.
Change of command in the Fosston School District as Superintendent Todd Selk is leaving and will be the new superintendent in the Crookston School District. Replacing him is Derek Gieseke who was the Superintendent and Principal in the Grygla School District.
Police in Cloquet have issued an appeal to find the men involved in a burglary at a liquor store last week. The thieves targeted Super One Liquor at 707 Hwy. 33 S. “Several bottles of Fireball, Buzz Ballz, and a cash register were stolen after a break-in,” the department says, noting that the cash register has since been recovered.

The History Center in Shevlin Began Summer Hours. The History Center in Shevlin started its summer hours. The museum and historical buildings are now open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-4:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. There are all new exhibits in the main gallery and several new items inside the historic buildings. Free admission, donations welcome. A winning lottery ticket sold in the Twin Cities for a draw last weekend is worth a Minnesota record $34.12 million. The Minnesota Lottery announced that a ticket for the July 18 Lotto America drawing matched all six numbers. It was sold at the Holiday Stationstores at 601 Coon Rapids Blvd. in Coon Rapids.
A DNA discovery has led two families to accuse a North Dakota hospital of changing the course of their lives after learning two newborns were allegedly switched at birth nearly four decades ago. Kyle Bylin uncovered the truth after receiving an at-home DNA test during a Christmas gift exchange. The test connected him with his biological aunt through a genealogy platform, prompting her nephew, Jeremy Morrison, to take his own DNA test. The results confirmed the two men had been raised by each other’s biological families. According to a complaint filed against Unity medical center in North Dakota, Jeremy Morrison and Kyle Bylin were the only babies born at the hospital just hours apart on 28 January 1988. The lawsuit alleges that, without their parents’ knowledge, the newborns were switched before they left the hospital, with each child being raised by the other’s biological parents. The complaint also names both men’s parents as plaintiffs
