Minnesota voters are deciding this fall whether schools should get more money from a state trust fund. The constitutional amendment would increase payouts from the Permanent School Fund. The fund was established in 1858 with proceeds from the sale of timber and minerals. Supporters say the change could give districts more flexible funding without raising taxes. Advocates are trying to raise awareness of the amendment because ballots with the question left blank will be counted as no votes against the proposal.

In addition to the name change, they are renovating the store’s interior and updating features to enhance your shopping experience at this long-time community staple. Principal Tharaldson says Clearbrook-Gonvick students have registered for their classes next year. New students will have an opportunity to register in the fall at the back-to-school registration event. New Families with students who would be interested in attending Clearbrook-Gonvick next year are encouraged to contact the office to start the registration process this spring before summer break for planning purposes. Janet Knutson has published a new book
Janet Helene Hanson Knutson has written a poetry book. After several people urged her to get one done. She has published her first one, “Keeper of the Tree: A memoir in poems, prose, and historical nonfiction.” She was born in Berner to parents Alfred and Emma Hanson. Her two brothers Don and Bob completed the family. She enjoys writing and has submitted articles, historical information and pictures to area history books that have been printed. She and her husband Lloyd were married for 67 years. They had two sons Daniel and Dean. He passed away In October last year and the book was dedicated in his memory.

Tornadoes touched down in Becker, Grant, and Kittson counties last Monday, including one that hit an area north of Detroit Lakes pretty hard.

The History Center in Shevlin Began Summer Hours. The History Center in Shevlin started its summer hours. The museum and historical buildings are now open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-4:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. There are all new exhibits in the main gallery and several new items inside the historic buildings. Free admission, donations welcome. A plane carrying six people crash-landed at a Cass County airport. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called to the airport just before 3 p.m. on Sunday. Authorities say the 1984 Beechcraft Bonanza was landing when a problem was discovered with its landing gear. The plane skidded along the runway before stopping, forcing the airport to close briefly while crews removed the aircraft and debris. Officials say the pilot was a 71-year-old Iowa man, and two adults and three children were aboard as passengers.

Gun deaths in Minnesota are down. A study conducted by Project Minnesota shows a 20 percent decline in firearm homicides statewide from the previous year. The study also shows that suicides increased from 72 percent to 77 percent. Project Minnesota is an organization dedicated to preventing gun violence.
Mississippi Music at the Bemidji Waterfront kicks off its 10th year of free summer

An adult female died after being pulled unresponsive from Lake Andrusia east of Bemidji in Ten Lake Township last week. Beltrami County Communications Center was called just after 4PM Monday to an area near the Mission Road Bridge and dispatched Beltrami County Deputies and Leech Lake Tribal Police and Leech lake Ambulance to the scene. A Leech Lake Tribal Officer and a bystander pulled the woman from the water and life-saving efforts commenced. The victim was transported via ambulance to the hospital, but did not survive. The victim was reportedly swimming when she became unresponsive. The case is under investigation, and no other information will be released at this time.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 73 state parks and recreation areas. This Free Park Day is one of four days each year on which visitors don’t need a vehicle permit at state parks and recreation areas. The DNR offers one-free day in each season, giving Minnesotans an opportunity to experience the parks at different times of year.
