Last week held two playoff games for the Chargers girl’s basketball team. On Thursday, March 3rd, the team played KCC at Northland Community & Technical College in TRF. The Chargers defeated the Bearcats 56-51, advancing them to another game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, in TRF, on Saturday, March 5th. The team’s season came to an end that afternoon when they lost to Stephen/Argyle 27-59.
Stats from March 3rd vs. KCC
Ashley Moe 11 points, 2 rebounds; Ashlyn Henrickson 2 points, 6 rebounds; Brooke Anderson 3 points, 7 rebounds; Hannah Dietsch 9 points, 7 rebounds; Karlee Johnson 2 rebounds; Madison Bakken 13 points, 6 rebounds; Mariah Coan 5 points, 5 rebounds; Shantel Verbout 13 points, 6 rebounds.
Coaches Comments: “We are very proud of the girls, not just for this game, but for the season. Their hard work from the season showed in this game. We got down at halftime 16-28. We had 21 turnovers in the half. That is too many. We came out in the second half a little more relaxed. We ran through our offense and started scoring. We scored 40 points in the second half. Some of the girls got in early foul trouble, but the bench stepped up when we needed them. Ashley Moe had a good second half with some key steals and free throws at the end. Watching the girls after this game is what makes this job such a joy to do. They were all so happy and excited. I was very happy for them.”
Stats from March 5th vs. SAC
Ashley Moe 10 points; Ashlyn Henrickson 6 rebounds; Brooke Anderson 2 rebounds; Carlye Kiesow 2 rebounds; Hannah Dietsch 3 rebounds; Karlee Johnson 2 rebounds; Madison Bakken 2 points, 5 rebounds; Mariah Coan 5 points, 6 rebounds; Mercedes Coan 2 points; Shantel Verbout 8 points; 7 rebounds.
Coaches Comments: “We lost this game because of the pressure Stephen Argyle is so good at. They forced us to speed the game up, we couldn’t get our plays started, and they forced us into bad passes. Defensively I thought our Man-to-Man defense was fine. That is something we struggled with throughout the season, but I am very happy the way we played defense and especially Man-to-Man defense the last two games. Playing in the Ralph was still a good experience for these young ladies. It is something they will always remember.”
When asked about his first season, Varsity Head Coach Elroy Johnsrud, said he enjoyed it very much. The Chargers ended the season at 11-15, and the playoffs at 12-16.
He commented, “The girls made it easy to come to practice and games everyday. They were all so coachable; they have a good knowledge of the game and came to practice to get better every day. I think this season was success. I know some people think that for the season to be a success, you have to win the section. I think that there is more to it. The girls worked hard everyday and got better throughout the year. We had some ups and downs during the season, but every team does. It’s the good teams that can get out of down times and start playing well again, and I think our team did that. I hope the girls feel like they accomplished something this year because I think they did. They should feel good about this season.”
The team will be missing a few seniors next year; Shantel Verbout, Madison Bakken, Mariah Coah, and Marisa Newton, Manager. “These girls helped myself and the team more than they will ever know. I hope they keep in touch with all of us and I wish them the best of luck.”
In closing, Johnsrud extends his thanks to the rest of the coaching staff. “Head coach, assistant coach, 8th grade coach, and 7th grade coach are just labels. Just like it takes a team to win games, it takes a team of coaches to coach a team. For all that I am concerned, we are all the Varsity Coach. Kelsey and Preston did an awesome job with the 7th and 8th graders. It looked like the girls had fun, got better throughout the season, and respected them. Alex did an awesome with the JV. They also looked like they improved throughout the year and were having fun while doing it. They all helped with the Varsity, and I am thankful for that. I would also like to thank the parents and the community. The support you all gave our girls basketball team is awesome.”
