Chargers Basketball hosts two double headers

Last week was a busy week for the Chargers Basketball teams. On Monday, November 30th, the boys hosted Sacred Heart – East Grand Forks in Goodridge. GG lost the game by 8 points with a final score of 43-51. Head Coach Mike Gast said of the game, “We had too many turnovers. We cannot win ballgames if we don’t take care of the ball better. We need more discipline with the ball. We played hard and with a lot of heart. We rebounded pretty well. We will get better.”
Stats from the GG/SH game are: Scoring: Dylan Walker 15, Ben Groven 9, Tyler Stinar 6, Ty Jelle 4, Blaine Kriel 4, Benji Wilebski 4, Jesse Wiseth 1.
Rebounds: Dylan Walker 14, Ty Jelle 8, Ben Groven 7, Blaine Kriel 6, Benji Wilebski 4, Tyler Stinar 3, Jesse Wiseth 3.
The Chargers played ball the next night, hosting a double header against Stephen Argyle in Grygla on Tuesday, December 1st. Both the varsity boys and girls teams lost their games. The boys had a final score of 57-64. Gast said the team has to be able to finish games without shooting themselves in the foot. “I feel bad for our players because they worked their butts off. We need to play smarter with a composed intensity. Once we improve in these areas we will be ok,” he added.
BBB Stats vs. SAC: Scoring: Dylan Walker 12, Tyler Stinar 12, Ty Jelle 9, Blaine Kriel 8, Ben Groven 7, Benji Wilebski 4, Jesse Wiseth 4, Hogan Lundeen 1.
Rebounds: Walker 9, Jelle 8, Wilebski 7, Groven 6, Stinar 4, Kriel 3.
The varsity girls basketball team is now coached by Elroy Johnsrud. In their game last Tuesday against the SAC Storm, they lost 41-64. Johnsrud said, “We started off a little slow, which will happen in the first game. Shantel got into early foul trouble so she had to sit. Other players jumped in and played well while she was out. Second half we did very well. The girls kept fighting and never quit.” Stats were not available at time of print.
On Thursday, December 3rd, Grygla was the site of another double header; the Chargers hosted Red Lake Falls. The Varsity girls team came out with the win by 2 points. Their score was GG 64, RLF 62. Head Coach Elroy Johnsrud said, “This was a hard fought game. We picked up the pressure on defense and handled the pressure on offense better than we did in the last game. We were getting to the basket and making them. We had a good lead, RLF made good come back, but the girls kept fighting and we pulled out a win. Shantel Verbout had a good night on the offensive side and defensive side. She had 37 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 steals. Hannah Dietsch handled the pressure very well and got our half court offense set up.”
The Chargers Boys team fell short in their game. They lost to RLC 41-66. “We took a step back in the improvement department. We didn’t do a lot of things well. This was not a good game for us in all facets of the game. I need to do a better job getting the kids mentally ready. I look for a huge improvement in our next game,” said Head Coach Mike Gast.
Scoring for the BBB/RLC game: Scoring: Blaine Kriel 10, Dylan Walker 8, Ben Groven 7, Ty Jelle 7, Jesse Wiseth 3, Tyler Stinar 2, Benji Wilebski 2, Cameron Naeseth 2.
Rebounding: Dylan Walker 11, Ben Groven 7, Blaine Kriel 6, Ty Jelle 6, Tyler Stinar 5, Benji Wilebski 3, Jesse Wiseth 1, Michael Jelen 1.
Up next this week for the Varsity Chargers: The Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament will be held at NCTC in Thief River Falls on December 7-8 & 10. The girls travel to Lancaster on Friday, the 11th, to play KCC. There is also a JH BBB game in Goodridge that day against RLCC.
