Basil Elmer Ness passed away on February 11, 2025, just 2 days after his 87th birthday at the Veteran's Home in Fergus Falls, MN. Basil was born on February 9, 1938 at Bagley, MN and spent his boyhood years at the family farm in Gully, MN.
Services will be held next summer at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick, MN.
In his early 20's, Basil joined the Army for two years and served at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and later stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he attended the Northland Community College atThief River Falls, MN, where he studied business.
Basil worked for the Soo Line Railroad as part of the main tie and rail gang, traveling from Sault Ste Marie, MI to Portal, ND (near the Montana and Canadian border) and from Portal, ND to Chicago, IL and places in between. He retired from the Soo Line Railroad around 2003. After retirement, he lived in Gonvick, MN and enjoyed listening to music, watching tv westerns, visiting casinos and coin collecting. Basil was an avid reader and liked to keep abreast of current events.
Basil never married.
In 2016, Basil moved to the Veteran's Home in Fergus Falls, MN. There he enjoyed watching tv, playing bingo and participating in various activities.
Basil was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and Elmer Ness, his infant brother Warren, his sister Eleanor Martin (Marty) and brother Anthony Ness (Elaine) and 2 nephews, Tim Martin and Aaron Ness.
He is survived by his sister Myra Coiner (Bob). He is also survived by 5 nephews, Mike Martin, Ryan Ness, and Mark, Craig and Eric Edevold and 2 nieces, Lorinda Ness Kompelien and Lisa Edevold. Condolences may be left at ceasefuneralhome.com.
