Tractor Trivia April 13
In 1947, John Deere came out with model M. It was a smaller tractor with a vertical 2 cylinder engine. John Deere wanted a smaller tractor for use and small farms or to help out on a larger farm. I have personally never driven an M John Deere but, it looks like a fun little machine. When the Walker Brothers had their auction, north of Oklee in 1987, they had a 1937 A John Deere, A nice GP John Deere and an M John Deere. My dad bought that 1937 A John Deere for me. I always wanted an unstyled tractor. But I really liked the look of that little M. I can also remember Tom Asselin driving uptown in Oklee on his M John Deere. The little Model M Tractors were made in Dubuque, Iowa. They were the first tractors in the Dubuque factory.
The M had been in development for many years during World War II prior to being introduced in 1947. The M replaced the H, L, and LA models. Three additional variants; the MT tricycle, MC crawler model, and MI industrial model were also built. It was the first to use Deere's Touch-O-Matic hydraulic system. PTO and electric starting were standard features on the Model M.
When the number series came out the M was replaced by the 40. Near that same time Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson were in the middle of a law suite over the three point hitch system. The suite was settled in 1952 and John Deere went to work adding a three point hitch system to their model M, but at that time they also replaced the M with the model 40, so the M never came with a 3 point hitch.
As time moved on the 40 was replaced by the 420, 430, and eventually a unique little machine the 435 Diesel came to be. Something about those little Deeres….they sure made a useful machine!
