RLCC 2015 Academic Banquet

The Red Lake County Central High School Academic Banquet was held April 13 at the Plummer gymnasium. The Academic Banquet and awards ceremony is held yearly during the fourth quarter. Students in grades 9-12 who have maintained a 3.5 GPA in core classes during the first, second, and third quarters of the current school year are presented with medals recognizing their achievement. Senior Awards are presented in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, English, and Technology.
Seniors receiving academic medals were Ric Ven Auman, Brittney Bray, Cody Gagner, Kayla Jaeger, Brittany Kelley, Cameron Lundeen, Mickala Morinville, Mikayla Paradis, Brian Roue, Sierra Swenson, Madison Thompson, and Kaytlin Trontvedt. Academic medals were presented to the following juniors: Morgan Bushelle, Shelby Haugen, Devin Lambert, Kayla Olson, Samantha Smith, Holly Vettleson, Wyatt Waldal, and Austin Waliser.
Sophomores receiving academic medals were Mary Auman, Megan Berberich, Taylor Bushelle, Ashley Longtin, Talon Porter, Tera Qualley, and Kelsie Sirjord. Freshman who received their medals included Hannah Kolstoe, Sydney Melby, Katie Olson, and Matthew Vettleson.
Students in the seventh and eighth grade that have also maintained a 3.5 GPA in core classes during the first three quarters of the current school year are asked to serve as waiters and waitresses. Eighth graders included Jarisa Bailey, Adam Cater, Sydnie Gunderson, Marie Johnson, Connor Lambert, Aries Qualey, and Dawson Rystad. Seventh grade waiters and waitresses were Madison Carlson, Calyssa Eskeli, Sophia Linder, Christopher Longtin, Derek Peterson, and Rickey Ulrich.
Mr. Randall Pederson, the High School Principal, started off with the welcome and invocation followed by dinner prepared by the elementary school cooks. Mr. James Guetter, the Superintendent, introduced the guest speaker Roger Walter who graduated in 1973 from Pershing High School.
For the special senior awards presentation, Mr. Pederson awarded Mickala Morinville the All Around Outstanding Senior Award. Mr. Bryan Paskvan gave the Senior Mathematics Award to Sierra Swenson. Brittney Bray was awarded the Senior Science Award from Mr. Steven Strutz. Madison Thompson received the Senior Social Studies Award from Mr. Randy Huie. Mr. Michael Swenson awarded Ric Ven Auman the Senior English Award. Brian Roue was given the Senior Technology Award from Mr. Strutz.
Mrs. Bonnie Cote told those attending that this was the 20th Anniversary of the Academic Banquet of the RLCC schools and noted a list of all the speakers on the back of the program. The banquet was the vision of Gary Lee, a School Board member at the time who approached the school and he himself got donations from businesses for the event and a tradition began. The speakers for the evening have ranged from mountain climbers, television broadcasters, business owners, those in a medical field, to MN State Supreme Justice, and others. In recent years the speakers have been former graduates of Pershing or Oklee High School or Red Lake County Central, each with their own message. Medallions have been presented each year to as many as 42 students in 1996 to as low as 18 with average being 25-30. This year 31 recipients were award academic medallions.
Mr. Pederson gave closing remarks and gave thanks to all who made the night so special such as the guest speaker, honored students, parents, families, faculty and staff, administration, and guests.
