Chloe Taylor was awarded Grand Champion on her project, Funny Flowers. Food coloring was used to show how colored water travels up a stem and into the flower petals. When a split flower stem was put in two different glasses of colored water, half the flower turned blue and the other half red. Chloe learned about the parts of a plant and the process of photosynthesis when writing her research report. Third grade boys who participated include: (Back row) Nicholas Hagen - Build aVolcano, Spencer Coan - Grain Elevator, Dominic Wilson - Underwater Volcano, Carson Rubischko - Make Your Own Flashlight, Caden Marquis - Driving Force. (Front Row) Donny Johnsrud - Electric Magnet, Hunter Kiesow - Energy for Life, Chase Manderud - Pulley Power. Third grade girls who participated include: (Back Row) Lily Beavis - Ice Needs Space, Chloe Tayor - Funny Flowers, Emilea Johnson - Construct a Camera. (Front Row) Hannah Lovly - Garden in a Bottle, Sophia Brown - Chain Reaction, Kennedy Panek - Build a Haunted House, Tiana Banasau - See How Liquids Float and Sink, Carter Lee Johnsrud - Printing Patterns. Lily Beavis received Grand Champion on her Science Fair project, Ice Needs Space. Lily learned how water expands when it freezes. She experimented by putting different containers of liquids in her freezer. The ice changed the shape of some plastic containers and even broke glass bottles. She learned that in very cold weather, water inside pipes may freeze and cause pipes to break. Lily also wrote a research report on the states of matter. Emilea Johnson’s project, Construct a Camera, received a Grand Champion Award. Emilea built a model of a simple camera to learn how it works. The camera used a magnifying glass to form a picture, just as the lens in a real camera does. The camera includes a sliding tube to help focus the image. The lens makes rays of light from the object bend and meet on the paper showing an upside down image. Emilea wrote a research report on the human eye and how it works.
