Deb Whalen of Oklee Advocates for Ag in Washington, D.C.

Deb Whalen of Oklee and Karolyn Zurn of Callaway, joined women from across the country, advocating for agriculture at American Agri-Women’s (AAW) recent Fly-In to Washington, D.C. Deb and Karolyn are members of Minnesota Agri-Women, which is an affiliate of AAW.
American Agri-Women is the nation’s largest coalition of farm, ranch and agribusiness women with more than 50 state, commodity and agribusiness affiliate organizations. Through grassroots action for 40 years, AAW members have presented the truth about production agriculture to consumers, elected officials, policy makers and others.
Karolyn and Deb met with representatives from leaders in the House and Senate as well as government agencies, including the Department of Agriculture and the EPA. AAW’s legislative priorities for 2015 include pollinator issues, ag labor, the Food Safety Modernization Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the “Waters of the U.S. rule” of the Clean Water Act.
Karolyn and Deb also attended AAW’s symposium on the topic, “Divided Lands: Federal vs. State Management in the West.” The symposium featured a panel discussion regarding federal land management as opposed to states managing their own lands American Agriculture & the Integrity of America’s Food Supply.”
“Fly-In is where we, as advocates for Ag, can make our voices heard on the current issues that affect our farms and families. It was a great experience and love being with such a great group of intelligent and enthusiastic women that have such passion for agriculture.” was Deb’s take on her attendance at American Agri-Women’s Fly-In. President of the Minnesota Chapter, Karolyn Zurn, is the current Chair of Government Affairs & Vital Issues. This is the heart and soul of our Fly-In. Karolyn was very pleased with attendance and also with the variety of speakers. Our members know the issues well, which makes our advocating a great experience.
