Over the past year, we’ve seen case after case of fraud in state programs that make the average Minnesotan’s head spin. We’re talking about billions of taxpayer dollars; and amount most of us struggle to put into perspective. Not only did it happen, but much of it is entirely preventable. People raised concerns as we’ve exposed through Fraud Prevention Committee hearings and the numerous reports coming from the Office of the Legislative Auditor. The warnings were always there. The follow-through is what was lacking.
Now we’re watching investigations for some of the flagship fraud cases like Feeding our Future play out. These cases took years, we got convictions, some felt like justice, many of them now feel far from it. Some of them almost seem like an advertisement for committing fraud in Minnesota. With many Minnesotans struggling to keep up with the tax burden, a chance at life changing money in exchange for probation or a single year in prison seems like a worthwhile risk!
While this plays out on the news, Minnesotans are left wondering how this was allowed to happen and why it keeps happening as we speak. This alone should stop government in its tracks but instead we’re shifting the burden to law-abiding Minnesotans with talk of raising taxes again.
In committee this week, Representative Witte laid it out plainly. Over a billion dollars in new taxes are already being discussed this session. That’s on top of what happened in 2023, when Democrats raised taxes by around $10 billion despite having an $18.5 billion surplus.
It didn’t happen all at once, but the feeling is becoming too much to ignore. It’s a creeping burden that needs to come to an end.
This session, Minnesota House Republicans have put forward a series of measures to provide immediate relief to taxpayers and the businesses trying to survive in what has become an increasingly suffocating environment for both families and industry alike.
We put forth workable proposals that would end taxes on tips and overtime. Other proposals include federal tax conformity so businesses can reinvest back into materials, equipment, and staff. And a drastic reduction in car tab fees, especially after Democrats have floated raising them to five times their current level, effectively making many Minnesotans pay for their car twice.
These are straightforward, practical ideas. Instead, we keep getting more of the same.
It's become incredibly frustrating for Minnesotans to hear the constant talk about “affordability” from Democrats while their focus stays on boogeymen billionaires and large corporations that don’t even live here and certainly aren’t bringing jobs or investment into Minnesota.
The pressure isn’t coming from some out-of-state billionaires and ‘evil’ corporations. It’s coming from decisions being made right here in St. Paul Minnesota. Taxes, fees, and mandates that keep stacking up. Higher tabs. Higher sales taxes. New fees. Property taxes that don’t stop climbing.
Under this status quo, Minnesotans are being priced out of their own state. Families and business owners are looking elsewhere, to neighboring states or places like Texas and Florida, where the cost of living and tax burden are actually manageable.
And it’s not just talk. Since 2020, Minnesota has lost an average of $500 million a year in adjusted gross income from people leaving. They’re not just taking their families and businesses, they’re taking their tax dollars with them; leaving everyone else to carry more of that load.
What’s the Democrat’s solution to this? Lower Taxes and improve affordability?
No….Place an exit tax on any Minnesotan who refuses to be a part of this wealth extraction.
Meanwhile, state government continues to grow, demanding more year after year, while failing to get a handle on fraud and waste. The result is exactly what we’re seeing now: fewer people paying in, higher pressure on those who remain, and a system that keeps asking for more without fixing what’s broken.
In that same committee hearing, Representative Witte said “predictable is preventable.”
When it comes fraud: we knew there were risks. We had chances to act. We didn’t, and now we’re paying an enormous price.
Now we have a chance to prevent us having an identical conversation over taxes in the years to come.
Before we ask Minnesotans for another dollar, we should be able to say with confidence that what’s already been collected is protected and being used the way it was intended.
Right now, the government is not working for the people of Minnesota. We have to make a change and I’ll continue to be a part of that so we can get back to enjoying a state we love.
