On a cool evening for the end of May, families and friends gathered in the Red Lake County Central High School Gymnasium, nicely decorated for this special occasion. Four pillars draped with green material and white flowers made a grand entrance for the senior class.
Covid-19 was not gone, but many had been vaccinated and numbers were low enough with summer like weather, and permitted a very normal graduation ceremony.
The Plummer American Legion Post #623 Honor Guard members: Jeff Aakhus, Barry Rewertz, Clarence Gagner and Jerome Bakke presented the colors.
"Pomp and Circumstance" was played by Peggy Miller on the piano followed by Superintendent Jame Guetter welcoming everyone to the ceremony.
Seniors Kia Bachand and Janae Olson presented their addresses to the class and the audience, before the musical performance by Karena Melby and Adriel Bakken playing guitar of the song "History" as performed by One Direction.
Senior Karena Melby presented her address to the class and audience.
Presentation of flowers was next with the graduates presenting a special person in their life a beautiful lily.
No graduation is complete without a Class video and the Class of 2021 was no different. They had many great photos of the years of fun and sometimes the mischief they had as a class.
Principal Randall Pederson officially announced, all the seniors present had completed all the requirements for graduation. A number of students in the class had also been working online with college level courses, 6 seniors completing 2 years equivalent of Community College.
The diplomas were presented by Pederson with the help of Mr. Matt Kolstoe, RLCC School Board Chair. Twenty-four smiling and very happy seniors proudly accepted their diplomas and the only complaint heard was that because of Covid restrictions, they were not allowed to toss their mortar boards.
The recessional was played by Peggy Miller and the new graduates of 2021 marched outside to greet their friends and families before going on to their own or others graduation parties.
They had an interesting year of school and their memories will be precious as they lived though an extraordinary year, reflected in their class motto; "Stay Positive, Test Negative."
Congratulations to the Class of 2021.
