2019 Year in Review...

August 7, 2019

Two youth from Red Lake Countydeveloped critical leadership skills during week-long experience. 43 Minnesota youth, including Sidney Olson and Tanisha Srnskyattended the 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) experience in Washington, DC June 22-29, 2019.

The RLCC White team won the Consolation Championship at the Cadets World Series. They lost their 1st game to Red Lake Falls, but then beat Clearbook/Gonvick, Fertile/Beltrami, Win-E-Mac, and then beat Red Lake Falls to win the Consolation.

The Red Lake County Rebels Boys' basketball team ended the summer with a tournament in Red Lake Falls and a final tournament in Perham. 

After a weekend of hot & humid weather, that brought scattered showers & thunderstorms, most of us didn’t receive enough rain and some of us didn’t get any. But at least the storms were not nasty and cause damage to the crops that are almost ready to harvest.

During the 4-H Awards Program, Chris & Valerie Shulstad presented to the audience the new Emerging Leaders for Red Lake County, Ben & Mikayla Tabert. The Emerging Leadership Program has its roots in the King Agassiz Program, first adopted by the Red River Valley Winter Shows [RRVWS] in 1961. County Kings were those individuals identified to represent counties at the RRVWS. That title was later changed (1994) to Agassiz Leaders.

On August 4th, Humbleberry Farms held their Annual Elberta Peach Day when everyone who ordered can pick up their lugs of peaches. In addition to the peaches, they have a quonset filled with all kinds of wonderful items for sale from local artisans. 

Oklee Market Day had something for everyone. There were local food vendors and Pickleball Tournaments, Corn Hole Tournament, a Mini-Carnival for kids of all ages by the school and down town there were old fashioned games for all ages and a sandpile dig for kids. A Chalk Art Contest decorated the streets of Oklee.

The Oklee High School Class of 1969 held their 50th Reunion on August 3rd in Oklee. Many of the classmates were in attendance. Attending were: Stanley Solheim, Tom Sweno, Delmer Nesland, Steve Radniecki, Bob Melby, Gary Weberg, Gary LaCousiere, Loren Vettleson, Bryan Paradis, Bob Reinbold, Bob Berberich,Connie (Tasa) Carlson, Renee (Champagne) Radniecki, Joy (Chervestad) Johnson, Becky (Melby) Svaren, Mary (Boucher) Walseth, Marilyn (Lefebvre) Stoneouse,  and Bob Hruby.

The weather has been very nice, if not a little cool, most will take it over the hot, hot days of August. It is good working outside weather too!

The Hero Hustle 5K volunteers were: Bobbi DuCHamp, Kim Olson, Tracy Hamm, Sylvia Majeres, Bobbie Olson. and  Jill Chervestad.

The winners (Heroes) of the 5K were: 12 & under - Eli Nelson (24:24 and Ashlyn Nelson (24:50); 13-18 - Caden Lee (32:41) and Shawna Majeres (29:20); 19-29 - none; 30-39 - no men and Brittanie Pahlen (25:51); 40-49 - Quentin Nelson (25:40 and Michelle Bakken (29:36); 50-59 - Larry (Snook) Olson (43:14 and Holly Spong (30:25); and 60 and over - Bob Melby (46:11 and Mary Jo Mugaas (31:06). 

Last Thursday on the way to Thief River Falls, on the Casino road it started raining and soon could no longer see as the rain was coming down so hard until about 4 miles from Thief River

Falls when it stopped abruptly and the highway was perfect.

Tri-Valley Opportunity Council was “On The Go” this summer, and on August 15th, they stopped in Brooks, Oklee, Red Lake Falls to visit with people in those areas and to let them know about all the programs they offer for people. There are many programs that senior citizens can use to make their lives easier.

A book/author program was scheduled for Thursday, September 26 at 6:00 pm at the RLF Library, when writer & author Christopher Ingraham will talk about his new book “If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now: Why We Traded the Commuting Life for a Little House on the Prairie.”

The 2019 Rebel football season started on August 12th. This year 60 players have reported in grades 7th-12th. The breakdown of players include 10 seniors, 11 juniors, 7 sophomores, 6 8th graders and 16 7th graders.

This morning began with bright sun shining. It didn’t take too long before clouds appeared and the sun disappeared. Now this afternoon it is trying to show a little sunshine again.

Our Redeemer Church in Plummer celebrated their 100th year anniversary on Sunday with a dinner that was catered and bars that were donated. There was a good turnout of around 100 people. It was an enjoyable day for everyone.

Thursday, the combines were going east of Hwy 59 between Brooks and Plummer. There were three in one field.
