The month of July is an ‘Open Your Heart’ challenge in which the Grygla-Gatzke Food Shelf is participating. During this challenge, any funding raised locally will have the opportunity to be matched by state funding through ‘Hunger Solutions Minnesota’. This is the second main funding campaign each year because of the opportunity to receive matching funds. Any funding raised during the month of July will be matched proportionally to funds raised by other food shelf organizations. A minimum of $250.00 must be raised to receive the minimum guaranteed match of $150.00 from Hunger Solutions.
During the first funding and food drive in March, $3,810 was received, along with 378 pounds in food donations. Each year, it costs about $10,000 to provide food for local clients.
Summer vacation may bring visions of happy, carefree children, but it is also a time when school breakfasts and lunches are not available, putting a greater burden on families to provide meals for their families.
‘Hunger Solutions Minnesota’ and ‘Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless’ partner with Minnesota food shelves each summer to address this concern. If you are planning to donate to your local food shelf, July is the time to make it happen!
Donations can be sent or given to Lori Thompson Grygla-Gatzke Food Shelf, 222 S. Evelyn Avenue, P.O. Box 105, Grygla, MN 56727.
