On March 16, 2019, the Pennington/Red Lake County 4-H Junior Poultry Project Bowl Team competed at the Northern Regional contest held in Deer River. The Junior Poultry team which consisted of Rylan Torstveit and Brianne Ellison of Pennington County and Hailey Hanson of Red Lake County took first place. The Pennington/Red Lake Junior Poultry Team will now participate in the State contest held in Sauk Rapids on April 6th.
The snow is melting nicely and even though we got a few flurries on Sunday, I’m not going to complain. I hear that the weather next week is expected to get into the 40’s & 50’s.
Clarence and Dianne Gagner went to the Cities last weekend, and watched their grand daughter, Ashton Gagner, daughter of Dan and Alicia Gagner, compete in gymnastics at the Convention Center. She did very well and qualified to compete in Regionals in Iowa sometime in April.
On Feb. 21st, Mike Fossum left to visit his brother Jim Fossum and wife Chris at Harvest, Alabama. He stayed three days and went to the Gulf of Mexico. He also visited a cousin at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
The Red Lake County Central High School recognized two students who were selected as the Students of the Month for February. They were Annika Senum and Maddie Inda-Valdez.

“You Know the Old Slaying” was presented by special arrangement with Brooklyn Publishers, LLC in assocation with Heuer Publishing, LLC. Tyrell Hamrum was the director and this is his first year taking over the RLCC plays. He worked earlier in the year with the One Act Play competition and this was his first play to be presented to the public.
Monday, March 25th was Public Performance Night for those in speech from Red Lake County. There were ten performances.
Oklee Community Ed is sponsoring events in the next three months. They include Pickleball, Painted Barn Quilt Class, Oklee Community Rummage Sale and Oklee Swimming Lessons.
Cindy and Del Determan went to the wedding of Aaron Yaggie and his new wife Brittany on Saturday in Thief River Falls others from the Brooks area that attended this beautiful ceremony and the reception at the Ralph were Pam Paradis, Ryan and Kelsey Paradis and Ethan Paradis.
This week will be a waiting period for the ground to dry up somewhat after the water goes down. So it is time to get other things done before going out to clean up after winter.
Cold winters help prevent many potential pest insects from establishing here or requires species that cannot survive our winters like potato leaf hopper or black cutworm to migrate up from southern states. Extreme cold can also knock back species that are established here.

Watching the news reports on Thursday and into the night, there were reports of many places in the south end of Minnesota with outpower and many power poles were snapped off just above the ground. This was the 2nd “bomb cyclone” storm to hit the same area. The reason they are called cyclone bombs is because the barometric pressure drops so low.
Senior awards went out to Marie Johnson and Sarah Christensen. Marie Johnson also received the Academic All-State Award. She had to have over a 3.75 cumulative GPA and be on varsity her junior and senior year.
Conference Honorable Mention certificates were given to three RLCC Mustang wrestlers: Oscar Duden, Paul DeHate, and George Duden. North Star Wrestling All-Conference medal winners were Tristyn Ferguson, Zach Howard, and Damon Ferguson.
The Annual Red Lake County 4-H Share the Fun performances were held on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at the Lafayette High School, Robert Matzke Gymnasium. The 4-H Clubs performing a skit were: The Huot Hustlers 4-H Club (4-H Volunteer Leaders, Sara Kenfield, Lee and Jaclyn Rondorf) with their skit called, “A 4-H Made For Me,” and the Garnes Go Getters 4-H Club (4-H Leaders, Kim Olson and Tracy Hamm) with their skit “Mystery Machine.”
On Saturday evening, March 30th, an appreciation supper was held at the Plummer Legion. It was to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Legion.

Red Lake County Central junior Jayden Iverson was honored to win the state championship in Poetry at the Minnesota State Speech Tournament held April 12 at Wayzata High School. She is a member of the Red Lake County Speech Team. Iverson advanced to state by placing third at the Section 8A competition held in Fosston.
Brittany (Berberich) Hagen spoke to the attendees of the Academic Banquet at Red Lake County Central High School on April 8th about “Change.” She encouraged people to constantly strive to learn new things, to make differences and adapt, and to always be ready for change.
Sunday was a beautiful day for Easter Sunday. The temperatures were in the 60’s, but it was a bit overcast at times with sprinkles of rain once in a while.
Senior Citizens met on Thursday. They had the business meeting and enjoyed potluck lunch. They voted for a scholarship winner for $100. Sarah Christopherson won it.
